Dr. D.L. Alverson Biography

Dr. Dayton L. Alverson is senior scientist and founder of Seattle's Natural Resources Consulting, Inc. Established in 1980 to meet the need for a comprehensive consulting service dealing with all aspects of marine and inland fisheries and their related resource base, NRC has become a world leader in fisheries research.

As director of the National Marine Fisheries Service Northwest and Alaska Fisheries Center from 1970 to 1980, Dr. Alverson was responsible for planning, managing, administering, and evaluating the NMFS' comprehensive research and development program in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. In this capacity Dr. Alverson coordinated research in the fields of fishery biology, zoology, oceanography, chemistry, physical sciences, engineering, fishery methods, equipment development, and food science.

In addition to his career in U.S. fisheries research and management, Dr. Alverson is an internationally recognized expert in world fisheries. Among other duties, he served for a number of years as member and/or chairman of the Advisory Committee on Marine Resources Research of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the foremost international agency in aiding fisheries of developing countries.

Prior to establishing NRC, some of Dr. Alverson's posts included:

  • Director, Exploratory Fishing and Gear Research, University of Washington
  • Associate Director for Fisheries and Acting Director, U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, Washington, D.C.
  • Affiliate and Visiting Professor, College of Fisheries and Institute for Marine Studies, University of Washington

Dr. Alverson's accomplishments as facilitator and negotiator in various national and international forums in marine and fisheries policy and research are too numerous to detail here; some highlights are:

  • Advisor to the U.S. Department of State for a variety of negotiations, including International North Pacific Fisheries Commission Treaty, U.S.-U.S.S.R. fisheries problems, and establishment of U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone
  • National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration delegate to Law of the Sea Conference
  • Fishing industry negotiator for Marine Mammal Protection Act
  • Commissioner, U.S. Section, International North Pacific Fisheries Commission
  • Member, Marine Board of the National Academy of Science
  • Chief of Staff and Chief Negotiator, U.S. Delegation, U.S.-Canada salmon interception negotiations
  • NMFS representative, meetings of Deep Ocean Mining Environmental Study

 

Dr. Alverson has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific and technical articles ranging in subject matter from opportunities for development of new U.S. fisheries to theoretical considerations in modeling of fish populations.
