Nereus Research Associate

The Fisheries Centre, a research institute in the College for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of British Columbia, invites applications for a full-time Research Associate to work on the “Nereus – Predicting the Future Ocean” program. This program is an international fisheries management and conservation collaboration between The University of British Columbia, The Nippon Foundation, Japan, and four academic institutions.

The anticipated start date is 1 April 2012 with an initial one-year appointment; it is a continuation of an ongoing activity. The position may be renewable upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will undertake the following roles and responsibilities:

  1. Research on how global fisheries governance systems can be developed to incorporate notably anthropological factors;

  2. Research aspects of strategic planning, system development and policy development, and conduction of research on socio-economic and governance aspects related to fisheries management and marine conservation.

  3. The successful candidate will participate in the program steering committee, which sets the strategic guidelines for the program, and will work closely with the program leader on all aspects of the program conduction.

Working Relationships

This position will report to Dr Villy Christensen, and will co-supervise fellows and staff of the program.  The successful candidate will interact with and take direction from the program steering committee.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a related PhD and at least six years of postdoctoral experience in resource management and conservation with emphasis on marine policy and socioeconomic research.  We seek a candidate who has worked in both science and policy research projects in multicultural and interdisciplinary settings. The candidate must have presented at international conferences and published relevant articles in peer-reviewed international journals. We also require experience with marine conservation and resource management in Japan, and working in Japanese foundations and international organizations concerned with ocean policy. Expertise communicating science and coordinating interdisciplinary research is necessary.

The position is based at the Fisheries Centre at the UBC Point Grey Campus in Vancouver. Considerable travel to notably the other network institution and The Nippon Foundation will be required.  Fluency in speaking and writing English and Japanese is required, as the successful candidate will serve as liaison between UBC, The Nippon Foundation, and Japanese organizations.
