ABSTRACT
This reports documents a workshop held in May 1998 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada, devoted to comparing the present Hecate Strait ecosystem with a reconstruction of its previous configuration, 100 years ago. The models were constructed using the Ecopath software and parameterized using data extracted from written and oral sources, notably a variety of knowledgeable stakeholders, including Aboriginal and other fishers.
The ecosystem reconstructions thus achieved, which illustrates the Fisheries Centre's 'Back to the Future' approach, is tentative, but may serve as a template for managing the marine resources of Hecate Strait in an ecosystem context.
The descriptions of the ecosystem models and their parameterization are complemented by a more detailed account of change in the biomass of lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) and brief accounts of the local knowledge held by First Nations in the Hecate Strait area, as reflected in annotated Tsimshian and Haida word lists covering fish and other marine organisms.
