Biography

Marivic G. Pajaro received her BSc from the University of the Philippines at Los Banos with a major in Zoology. She spent two years as research assistant at the University of the Philippines-Marine Science Institute then moved on to work with a non-government organization, the Haribon Foundation for Conservation of Natural Resources. She was involved in various community-based marine conservation projects as researcher and team leader at Haribon. These included projects such as training ornamental fish collectors some alternatives to sodium cyanide use, environmental education in fishing communities, documentation of marine protected areas in the Philippines and survey of coastal areas affected by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. She was the Philippines national coordinator for Project Seahorse (now also known as Project Seahorse Foundation for Marine Conservation, Inc.) before coming to Canada. She is presently pursuing her PhD at the Department of Resource Management and Environmental Studies doing a study on the biological, social and economic indicators of success in community-managed marine protected areas under the supervision of Dr. Amanda Vincent.
