Telmo Morato Gomes

Biography
Telmo Morato completed his PhD degree under Professor Tony Pitcher at the UBC Fisheries Centre in February 2007. His thesis explored aspects of seamount ecology and fisheries. Initially, he characterized the seamount distribution on the Azores EEZ using bathymetry datasets. In clarifying how seamounts affect primary productivity, Telmo showed that primary production enhancement is not sufficient to support often-observed large aggregations of fish. He demonstrated the importance of seamounts to some large pelagic fish, marine mammals and seabirds. Telmo was not able to quantify the amount of catches taken from seamounts around the world. Instead, he demonstrate that global landings of demersal marine fishes have shifted to deeper water species over the last 50 years, an indirect indication that seamounts have also increased in importance. Moreover, Telmo showed that 'deep-water', 'seamount' and 'seamount-aggregating' fish stocks may be at serious risk of depletion, since their life histories render them highly vulnerable to overfishing with little resilience to overexploitation. He has also performed ecosystem modelling analyses which suggested that industrial fisheries are not viable on seamounts. However, regulated small-scale artisanal fishing fleets could be sustained by seamount ecosystems.
Telmo is currently working as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores investigating ecosystem-based approaches to the management of Azores marine resources, biodiversity and habitats. He is also involved on ongoing seamount and deep-sea coral research. Telmo's scientific output, mainly dedicated to seamount ecology, seamount fisheries management, ecosystem modelling, trophic ecology and to the Azores ecosystems, comprises over 20 contributions to peer-reviewed journals, 8 book chapters, and many other reports. Telmo has recently co-edited with Tony Pitcher (and others) a book on "Seamounts Ecology, Fisheries and Conservation" and a report with Daniel Pauly on "Seamounts: Biodiversity and Fisheries".
